Holding the ivory properly so it can’t move is an important tip for saving time when doing Scrimshaw.
For years I used leather bags filled with small hard beans. I had two different sizes of bag and a block of wood wrapped in cloth. About a year ago (2014) I bought an Engravers Block online from China for about $200.00AU. This made a huge difference because I could hold the ivory firmly and rotate the Scrimshaw in any direction to get the right lighting angle.
