Snarl Scrimshaw
The next picture I’ve chosen is a Leopard. The ivory is Fossilised Walrus and I’m expecting it to look quite stunning. It weighs 454 grams – a very heavy old piece and is 14cm high by 9.5 wide.
Step 1 – 05/10/19
This is the fossil Walrus polished and ready to have the Leopard picture attached. It has a rough spot in the center top, plus strong discoloration at the bottom and top left, I’m sure they will cover up OK.
Step 2 – 05/10/19
This is the Ivory with the Leopard picture attached and ready for the outline to be cut out.
Step 3 – 06/10/19
The picture is now cut out and I’ll start to fill in the black areas. This is time-consuming but quite easy.
Step 4 – 15/10/19
The black areas are finished, so I’m moving on to the yellow of the Leopard. That black was time-consuming.
Step 5 – 18/10/2019
The fur on its face is now complete.
Step 6 – 25/10/2019
I’ve finally finished the pink of the tongue and green of the eyes which really set it off.
Base/Stand
The base is fashioned from a piece of Rosewood which wraps around the walrus ivory. The nameplate is made from Mammoth ivory and is scrimshawed with the title – “Snarl”.
The End.
