Leopard Scrimshaw – “The Dark One”

The Dark One

Original Image

Original Image

My next choice is a Leopard, (this is actually a painting, not a picture)the black background and yellow/brown of the Leopard should be quite striking, the Mammoth ivory weighs 62 grams and measures 85mm wide by 90mm high, I will scrimshaw the inside curve as it is nice and clean.

Black Areas Added

Step 3-18/9/2019

Step 4-19/9/2019

This is the right side filled with black, to get this black so intense takes quite a bit of time (the ivory must be totally stippled) but it is easy because it has no detail.

Step 5-20/9/2019

The entire background is now finished; next, I will do the log at the bottom.

Finished Scrimshaw

Step 7-4/10/2019

This is the finished scrimshaw.

Next, I will start on the base and nameplate.

The Base/Stand

Step 1

Wood with base design

I will use a piece of Rib Fruited Mallee (an Australian wood), it has an incredible pattern.

Step 2

After cutting with a band saw

This shows the base roughly cut out with a bandsaw.
