Chilling Out Tiger Scrimshaw

Chilling Out Tiger

This tiger is the next picture I’ve chosen to scrimshaw. I seem to keep coming back to tigers because of the vivid colors and striking patterns which make each scrimshaw very striking, green and orange is a striking combination.

The Mammoth Ivory weighs 76 grams and is 11.5cm wide x 10.5cm high. It has a strong curve and I decided to work on the outside as it is nice and clean.

Step 1 – 10/07/19

I forgot to photograph the beginning steps, so here it is with the etching finished and black areas scrimshawed.

Step 2 – 11/07/19

The right side background is now finished, this has been quite a time-consuming job, a lot of detail. I will now start on the left side background.

Step 3 – 20/07/19

The left side background is now finished, once again very time-consuming. As you can see, its very striking. I will now start on the Tiger.

Step 4 – 25/07/19

This is the finished piece, this scrimshaw is hard to photograph because of the severe curve of the Mammoth Ivory, you can only see about 60% of the Scrimshaw at any one time. Next, I’ll make the stand/base and nameplate.

Base/Stand

Now for the base. This one will be done in Rose Wood with a Mammoth Ivory nameplate.

This is a nice piece of mahogany with the outline of the base drawn onto it.
