Malayan Tiger Scrimshaw
This tiger is the next picture I’ve chosen to scrimshaw. I seem to keep coming back to tigers because of the vivid colours and striking patterns which make each scrimshaw very striking.
The Mammoth Ivory weighs 60 grams and is 12.5cm wide x 8.5cm high. It has a slight curve and I decided to work on the inside surface as the outside is too discoloured.
Step 1 – 15/06/19
Here is the Ivory polished and ready to begin the scrimshaw. It has some discoloration but should be fine when finished.
Step 2 – 15/06/19
This is the Ivory with the tiger picture attached ready to cut out the outline.
Step 3 – 16/06/19
This is the ivory with the outline cut out through the picture and inked.
Step 4 – 17/06/19
This is the ivory with the black in areas filled in.
Step 5 – 22/06/19
This is the right side jungle completed. It was quite time-consuming as there’s a lot of detail in the jungle foliage.
Step 6- 30/06/19
This is the jungle on the left hand side complete. Once again in very time-consuming detail.
Step 7- 04/07/19
This is the body of the Tiger complete.
Step 8- 10/07/19
This is the completed Scrimshaw.
Base/Stand
Now for the base. This one will be done in Rose Wood with a Mammoth Ivory nameplate.
Step 1-
The raw wood with the outline drawn onto it.
Step 2-
The base cut out with a band saw.
Step 3-
The base almost finished with the nameplate ready for scrimshaw.
The End.
