Whale Scrimshaw

This Scrimshaw is of a family of whales and was done in 2001 using black ink. The Ivory is ancient fossilized Mammoth Ivory from Siberia. It weighs 124 grams and measures 120mm wide x 50mm high. The shape is called a “plaque”. That means it’s flat with even sides, which is the most desirable shape of Ivory to work on. This piece was Scrimshawed by Dan Cronon, an American scrimshaw artist.

The Scrimshaw

I don’t have any progressive pictures as I didn’t Scrimshaw this piece myself.

The Base

The base is made from an unknown wood with an Ivory name plate attached using Sterling Silver pins. When I bought this piece it was already in the base, I just added the name plate. The Ivory is set into a piece of wood which then slides into the rest of the base. It’s a very elegant design.
