Wolf Scrimshaw – “Malevolence”

Malevolence Wolf Scrimshaw

This will be my next scrimshaw, a snarling, growling wolf. If you saw this wolf coming at you out of the dark it would be terrifying. It will be scrimshawed on a piece of Fossil Walrus Ivory that was used as an ice axe by the Inuit people. It weighs 394 grams and is 180mm long x 60mm high.

Step 1 – 17/08/21

This picture shows the Walrus chunk which doesn’t look like a perfect piece of Ivory. There are plenty of cracks and blotches, but from past experience it should turn out nicely.

This picture shows the image attached to the Ivory, ready to be cut out.

Step 3 – 23/08/21

This picture shows the wolf cut out. Next I’ll fill in the black areas, which will take a lot of time. Whenever large areas need to be completely blacked out it’s very time consuming.

Step 4 – 30/09/21

Most of the black is finished, so I’ll move on to the legs and snarling, drooling face.

Step 5 – 18/10/21

The Wolf is finished, so now I’ll move on to the base.

Step 6 – 19/10/21

The base is a piece of wood salvaged from the off cuts bin at the local saw mill. The height of the Ivory made it a tight fit for the shelves of my display cabinet, hence the unusual design of the base with no bottom. There’s no nameplate because there wasn’t enough room with the way I had to make the base.
